Google Developers Website: Material Redesign
I joined the team in Aug 2014 and became the sole designer to work on the Material redesign of the Google Developers Website (aka DevSite). I created universal templates to work for the ~250 Google products that live on the site with over ~100,000 web pages bringing in 30M page-views/month. It was a huge undertaking to get right and fit for all our use cases. We soft-launched at Google I/O Spring 2015 and the overall site satisfaction went from 64% before launch to 76.4% post launch and received positive developer feedback.
Summary of my key contributions:
• Defined all visual language for the entire site from scratch, including typography, responsive grid, color palette, scrolling behavior, margins & padding, imagery tone, documentation templates, and other previously non-defined custom components.
• Teamed with, and reached out to cross-PA’s for collaboration with content owners and marketing across all Google.
• Led weekly DevSite Design meetings to discuss issues, progress, timelines, and managed expectations with key stakeholders.
• Created a detailed style guide for visual components and landing pages.
• Go-to person for diagrams and one-off illustrations.
• Led design reviews for existing and new landing pages by setting up bi-weekly office hours.
• Engaged with the tech writers and content owners to define pain-points and collaborate on solutions (on-going feature bug requests).
• Defined and created unique components for large documented sites since nothing like that existed on Spec with approval from the Material team. This included: sticky table of contents, deep level left nav, syntax code highlighting, non-card modules, marketing banners, butter bars, callouts and asides, confidential banners, and tabbed content widgets (not pages), and more
